The Brue Boys Shine Again Review of the concert from Ron Smith So far (Tuesday morning June 10th) the Baltonsborough Festival has got off to a brilliant start, including the best spell of summer weather so far and a marathon session from Somerset Sound.Last night however we were treated to a genuine village concert from the Brue Boys and one or two of their friends and supporters. Not forgetting the audience, as all Baltonsborough seemed to be there and, what’s more, having a good time. |

| The Brue Boys go from strength to strength, with the number slowly creeping up to what I know is Jennifer Martin’s secret (well, not so secret) ambition to find fifty men to sing for her. So far, so good and with each public show they are sounding more and more like a really professional group. They gave us everything from Some Enchanted Evening to Kumba Yah and we all enjoyed it.It wasn't all singing. | ||
| There was Grayson Pattemore and his ukulele: you can go for years without hearing one, then one comes on with all the nostalgic charm of this neglected instrument. Then Sue Peto and Gail Cornish came on with “Gossip” which left us torn between “Yes I know him” and “Surely they’ve made it up” We can’t leave Gossip without mentioning Louise (Clapp) as not only is she famous for being our village historian but she also plays the piano beautifully as indeed does the choir‘s resident and very dedicated pianist Carolyn Young (she played the harp at the last concert). The choir depends on Carolyn as she not only accompanies at concerts but also plays at their rehearsals. | ||
| There was a pleasant interlude where we had Phil Jackson believe it or not with another doctor at the piano and also to accompany Chris Hunt who is called a tenor but sings like an angel. Before that we had Richard Grundy bringing back a few music hall memories- I don’t think he really thought we went back to 1911. As is normal on these occasions a huge amount of work goes on behind the scenes not only with the Pageant but the supper we had was really exceptional - more like what the magazines call a finger buffet - you know: little pizzas, tartlets, tiny pasties - they all kept coming down the table. This was thanks to Beverley and her “team”- Nell, Jane and Dot and, well, the food was memorable. |

| Husbands were commandeered to man the bar. I know that in these comments you’re supposed to mention everybody* - and sometimes a few more - but this concert was a really special village occasion with everyone - the performers and the audience together having a great, friendly time. * Yes, Jennifer, I know I haven’t mentioned Robert Peto who compered so well and Andy Wale the lighting wizard, but there you are. | ||
